PAL New York Trip

St. Joseph’s College compete in New York!

After months of preparation and fundraising, St. Joseph’s College Public Access to Law team finally made it to New York – and what a week it turned out to be! On Tuesday, 8th November, 17 5th years students and 4 teachers arrived into Times Square, New York on the most exciting, nerve-wrecking and historic of days: the US Presidential Election! It seemed as if the world’s media had descended for the much anticipated results and we were in the thick of it! It was a surreal experience to see Times Square convert all its neon flashing signs into displays of election results. Even more surreal was to appear on a news report, live to Vincent Browne on TV3, obliviously taking the first of many group photos beside one of the reporters!

From Ellis Island, Lady Liberty, the musical ‘Wicked’ and the Empire State Building, to enjoying hot dogs in the warm weather in Central Park and visiting the 9/11 Memorial, the students had the opportunity of a lifetime to taste a little of what New York has to offer, and no one was left disappointed. Our legal eagles had to get down to business on day three of the trip with two full days of scrimmaging against other competing schools. Schools from Korea, Texas and California sharpened all minds in preparation for the New York District Court in Brooklyn on Saturday. It was such a proud feeling to see our attorneys, witnesses and time keeper compete in all four rounds of the competition. Each case challenged the 44 schools involved to defend or prosecute, according to the American legal system. We were delighted to see our own Emily Larkin awarded ‘Best Witness’ for her re-enactment of a shooting, while in the witness box. The PAL experience this year has been unforgettable, not only for the genuine goodwill and generosity of the families, school community, businesses and people of Lucan and beyond but also to see our own girls make the journey to the courtrooms of New York. A huge thank you to Michael Smyth and Wendy Bould for all their efforts along the way. Here’s hoping to see the girls take to the legal stage again in the future!
