Taoiseach Leo Varadkar Visit

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar Visit

On Wednesday 5th February the students and staff of St Joseph’s College welcomed the Taoiseach, Mr Leo Varadkar to the school. The Taoiseach was accompanied by two candidates for the General Election, Cllr Emer Higgins and past pupil Mayor & Cllr Vicki Casserly.

The Taoiseach and the candidates were greeted by student representatives and school management at the door and received a warm round of applause on arrival.

The purpose of the visit, which was arranged by Cllr Higgins was to allow the Taoiseach and the party to engage with the 5th Year Politics and Society class. The Taoiseach outlined his vision for the future and spoke about gender equality and empowering females more in society. Cllr Casserly, who is a past pupil of St Joseph’s College also spoke to the students about the role of women in politics.

The students asked a range of questions on issues such as climate change, housing, rights of people with disabilities, delays in the school extension and Brexit. It was a lively and informative meeting for the Fine Gael party, the students and their teacher Mr O’ Driscoll.

Our Principal, Ms Bernadette Fitzgerald was very pleased with the visit which was a wonderful opportunity for the school community to engage with senior politicians in the final stages of the election campaign. It also allowed students to have a voice on matters concerning them and they look forward to future visits by local representatives!
